Sammy’s favorite vaca spot was founded in 1879 as a Methodist meeting place. Four ministers met under a tall cedar tree, now in the lobby of the Ocean City Tabernacle, to create a Christian retreat and camp meeting. These men named the City and designed plans for cottages, hotel and businesses.
This favorite family resort by the sea has maintained its charm by continuing to ban the sale of alcoholic beverages. In 2005 Ocean City was named the Best Family Beach by the Travel Channel. With its beautiful beaches and world-famous boardwalk, there truly is something for kids of all ages. Our family loves to eat our way up and down the boardwalk! Tradition is strong; multiple generations of families enjoy vacationing here every year.
Ocean City attracts visitors all year by offering unique family and friend-gathering events. Some of these include First Night, a New Year’s Eve celebration planned for all members of the family complete with entertainment throughout the town. Easter brings hunts on the boards and on Asbury Avenue and there are Spring and Fall craft festivals. There is an annual DooDah parade and the Mummers are frequent guests. The week leading up to the 4th of July, called July Jubilee is filled with fun filled and unique events including taffy sculpting and treasure hunts, a freckle contest, bike parades and sand sculpting contests. Other popular annual events include the Night In Venice’s Boat Parade, Miss Crustacean Hermit Crab Beauty Pageant, Pamper Scamper, a baby parade, and Weird Week.
Market Days - the carnival in the book that Sammy attends - are held every Thursday on Asbury Avenue between 6th-11th streets from 10 am - 1 pm and feature great free family fun such as face painting, puppet shows, musicians, clowns sculpting balloons and more.
